A brand-new surface over the asphalt you already have — the look and life of new pavement, without the cost of tearing everything out.
Asphalt resurfacing — also called an overlay — is the process of laying a fresh layer of hot-mix asphalt directly over your existing pavement. When a driveway or private drive has turned gray, rough, and covered in surface cracks but the ground underneath is still solid, there’s no reason to rip it all out. A properly installed overlay gives you a smooth, jet-black surface that looks and performs like new.
The key word is properly. A resurface is only as good as the surface it’s bonded to. Before we lay a single ton of asphalt, we inspect the existing pavement, repair potholes and soft spots, fill cracks, clean the surface, and apply a tack coat so the new layer bonds tightly to the old one. Skip those steps and the old cracks simply show back up through the new asphalt within a season or two.
We’ll also tell you straight if resurfacing isn’t the right call. If the base has failed — widespread alligator cracking, sinking areas, or standing water — an overlay won’t hold, and full replacement is the better investment. After more than 30 years and three generations in this trade, we’d rather give you an honest answer than sell you a surface that won’t last.
Resurfacing is one of the smartest ways to stretch your paving dollar. Because there’s no full tear-out and hauling, an overlay typically costs well under a complete replacement and gets done faster — while still giving you a fresh surface that adds curb appeal and value to your property.
The catch is that a cheap overlay is worse than none at all. Paving over unrepaired damage just buries the problem for a little while. As a licensed Alabama General Contractor (#260383) with a 5.0 Google rating, we do the prep work that keeps your new surface smooth for years, not months.
